Early Career Advice

Hi everyone, I’m a Finance student based in Ontario, Canada, and I’m looking to break into commercial real estate.

I’m still early in the process and trying to learn as much as I can. If you have any advice, resources, or general insight on how to get started in this space, I’d really appreciate it.

In particular, I’m curious about how people learned the industry, what tools or certifications are worth picking up, and what might help me stand out when applying for internships or entry-level roles.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share — all advice is welcome.

If there is an emphasis on real estate, or a minor, see if you can take that. Join your local CCIM chapter in Canada, and/or other commercial group in the area. Many have reduced rates for students. In the summers intern as an analyst. Proximity will help you get internships, also join Linkedin and start following, connecting with people in real estate in your area and other big names. Let them know you’re a student and what your goals are.

CCIM, SIOR designations are great for both learning and networking. I have CCIM classes where college students are there for the designation. You may even try to fast track depending on the degree fro CCIM so check that out.
